Jalaine Holmstead Speth

Jalaine Holmstead Speth, 55, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2010, after a 20 year battle with cancer and other health complications. Jalaine was born on August 27, 1954, six minutes after her twin sister Janine, to Earl Guy ?Hap? and Leah Holmstead. She was the sixth of nine children and loved to talk about her childhood spent with her siblings and cousins in Logan. She graduated from Logan High School in 1972. While attending Utah State she met and fell in love with O?Dell Speth, whom she married on September 6, 1973, in the Logan LDS Temple. Jalaine?s life was spent serving those around her. She was a devoted and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous callings, including Cub Scouts, Visiting Teacher, and Relief Society president, she loved those whom she served and served with. Jalaine loved life! She loved everything about it. She loved to have fun. If you spent time with Jalaine, you were bound to have a good time. She had a way about her that made people feel welcomed, comfortable, and loved. Jalaine loved to work. She was very hard-working and took great satisfaction in making her family?s home a clean, inviting, and peaceful place to be. Jalaine was a fantastic cook and loved to make chocolate chip cookies to take around to neighbors and friends. She loved to perform small acts of kindness for people around her and many people were touched by Jalaine?s gentle ways. Jalaine was extremely creative and talented. She spent many years making crafts, decorating houses, writing skits and songs for all kinds of events, and planning great parties. Jalaine loved her family. She loved to support her husband by attending all of the football games and wrestling matches that he played in and coached. She loved her two daughters. She was never too busy to spend time with them and make them feel important and loved. For the past 20 years, her life was difficult as she endured multiple surgeries, hospitalizations, and other health complications, all without complaint and with a sweet smile on her face. She suffered much during this time and her family takes comfort that her pain is now over. The family wants to give a special thanks to Dr. Steven Curtis, Dr. Ryan Larsen, and Dr. Thomas Clark, as well as the staffs of IHC Home Health Care and Hospice, who compassionately provided care for Jalaine over the years. She is survived by her husband O?Dell; and children, Amy Ali Yakub of Smithfield and Ashley Wallar Matt of Salt Lake City. She is also survived by her parents, her siblings, and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved twin sister, Janine Ward, father in law, Kenneth Speth, and sister in law, Susan Speth. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Smithfield 16th Ward Chapel located at 451 South 250 East. A viewing will be held on Friday, August 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home located at 85 South Main in Smithfield and prior to services on Saturday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Smithfield Cemetery.
