J Allan Campbell

September 3, 1925 — March 10, 2007

J Allan Campbell was born on September 3, 1925 in Providence, Utah to Eletha Maud Simmons and Hopkin Benoni Campbell, Jr. He was born with a congenital heart defect and was not expected to live. In spite of this, he enjoyed a full life and miraculously lived to the age of 81. He died in his home surrounded by family members on March 10, 2007. Allan was raised with four siblings in Providence, Utah. He earned a bachelors degree in chemistry at Utah State University in 1947 and a Masters degree at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1949. He married Beth Loosle in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1949. The newlyweds moved to new adventures in Kalamazoo, Michigan where they resided for 56 years. In 2006, Allan and Beth moved to Smithfield, Utah to live closer to their family. Allan worked at the Upjohn Company for 35 years as a research chemist. He was the inventor or co-inventor of 75 agents or processes covered by U.S. patents, many of which were used to create medicines for humans and animals. He earned the Upjohn Award in 1970 for his outstanding accomplishments. Allan was also an expert woodworker. In his basement shop he built numerous toys for grandchildren, handy household items, and beautiful furniture for his wife and children. Allan was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was the first Branch President, first Bishop, and first Patriarch in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Allan and Beth were an integral part of the growth of the church from a handful of members to thousands in southwestern Michigan. Together they served a mission in Denver, Colorado from 1988-1989. Allan was known for his kind and gentle manner. He enjoyed 57 years, 2 months, and 10 days with his loving wife. He guided his children by often saying, ?Use your own best judgment.? His six children have tried to live up to his love and faith in them. Allan is survived by his greatest treasures: his wife, Beth Loosle Campbell, their six children and their spouses: Becky Campbell Olson Gilbert Olson, Jay Allan Campbell Mary Hosley, Melanie Campbell Tew Ryan Tew, Kent Loosle Campbell Suzanne Taylor Campbell, Dan Kurt Campbell Rebecca Driggs, and Sue Campbell Clark Paul Clark, and daughter-in-law Carole Newkirk, 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
