Hyrum Vance Pope

September 11, 1917 — September 30, 2006

Hyrum Vance Pope, 89, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, September 30, 2006. He was born September 11, 1917, in Moulton, Idaho, where his parents, William and Esther Webb Pope, were homesteading. In 1930 he moved with his family to Clifton, Idaho, where they continued to farm. In 1940, he accepted a mission call to serve in the Eastern States Mission, an experience which brought many memories and friendships which lasted throughout his life. On June 27, 1942, he married Emily Brooks in the St. George temple. He continued to farm, owning and operating farms in Arbon Valley and Arimo, Idaho, and co-owning a cattle ranch with his father and brother-in-law, Belton Hatch, near Monida, Montana. He later sold the farm, but after a few years of retirement, he purchased a motel in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
In 1981, Vance and Emily accepted a mission call to serve in the San Antonio Texas Mission. After their return, they lived in Logan, Utah. In 1993 they moved to River Heights, Utah, where they continue to reside. Vance was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a bishop, a counselor in the bishopric, a temple ordinance worker, and numerous other callings. Missionary work has always been a priority with Vance and Emily, and they have contributed financially to support more than 25 missionaries. In addition, and in his own quiet way, Vance encouraged those who were less active, and many have credited their present activity in the LDS Church to his patient persistence.
Vance is survived by his wife, Emily, and his children: Kathleen, St. George, Utah; Shirley Dennis Slack, Mt. Pleasant, Utah; Sandra Glenn Biddulph, Logah, Utah; Michael Jalene, Salem, Utah; Curtis Annette, Burley, Idaho; Flora Clark Howard, Panguitch, Utah; Barbara Oyler, Providence, Utah; and D?On Marvin Allen, South Jordan, Utah. He is also survived by one brother, Reese Margaret, Richmond, Utah. He leaves posterity of 39 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren with several more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Max and Myrle; two sisters, Elaine and Gayle; a son-in-law, Joe Oyler; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Pope.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the River Heights 3rd Ward chapel, 465 North 300 East, Providence. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and on Wednesday at the church from 11:30 to 12:30p.m. Interment will be in the Providence City Cemetery in River Heights.
