NEWTON ? Horace William Christiansen, ?Grandpa Christie? 75 of Newton, went to heaven on Friday, July 18, 2003 at his home in Newton. Horace was born August 16, 1927 in Newton a son of William Leslie and Drucilla Barker Christiansen. He married Ileen Duce on September 12, 1950 in the Logan LDS Temple. Horace grew up in Newton where he farmed and raised his family. He worked on the railroad and later retired as a fireman from Thiokol. Horace loved his kids and grandkids and was an avid outdoorsman. He tried never to miss a year of hunting, fishing, and family camping vacations until his illness. Horace was a kind gentle, funny and loving man who gave the best bear hugs ever. He helped anyone in need and he thanked everyone who helped him, even when speech was a difficulty. As a member of the LDS Church, Horace served as finance clerk, Elders Quorum president and High Priest group leader in the Newton Ward. Horace and Ileen served as officiators in the Logan Temple for six years. During World War II, Horace served his country in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Ileen of Newton; five children and their spouses: Chad and Trish Christiansen of Mandeville, LA; Mark Christiansen of Los Angeles, CA; Ann and Kim Godfrey of Jerome, ID; Cheryl and Frank Smith of Salt Lake City, UT and Greg and Cheryl Christiansen of North Logan, UT. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, a brother, Frank Christiansen and a sister, Bernice Nielsen. Horace was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard ?Pete? Christiansen.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 21, 2003 at 12:00 noon in the Newton Ward Chapel, 90 South 100 West. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan and Monday at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services.
