Harold Dean Mackey

April 18, 1929 — June 28, 2004

Hyrum: Harold ?Dean? Mackey, 75, passed away Monday, June 28, 2004, at his home in Hyrum following years of struggle with congestive heart failure. He was born on April 18, 1929, in Cokeville, Wyoming, the son of Harold Thomas and Martha Boehme Mackey.
He attended Cokeville schools, then wanting to join the war effort, enlisted in the Navy. However, the war ended shortly before his deployment to the Pacific. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy he moved to Logan to attend USU and received his bachelor?s degree in education. Dean married Jeleen Benson on June 4, 1949. They lived in Logan while he completed his education, then moved to Terreton, Idaho, where Dean taught school and later worked at Westinghouse. He moved his family back to Utah in 1959 and went to work for Thiokol until his early retirement. Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. Growing up he and his father spent many hours trapping, hunting and fishing in the Smith Fork Mountains. Friends said he could catch a fish in a mud hole after a rainstorm. Dad enjoyed hunting arrowheads and collecting antique bottles with his son-in-laws. Time spent fishing with grandpa will never be forgotten by his grandsons. After his retirement, Dad reinvented himself, developing hidden talents no one ever guessed. His cooking, candy making, individually wrapped candies on the Christmas tree, beautiful wall-hangings and the special Christmas stockings became legendary in our family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeleen; and children, Kathy Kent Christiansen of Hyrum, Linda David Petersen of Wellsville; Julie Rick Buttars of Nibley, David Dean Mackey of Hyrum and Holly Shaun Broadhead of Heber; 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Bonnie Mackey of Sacramento, CA and a sister, Beverly Allen Dunn of Preston, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and a great granddaughter Rachel Petersen. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Hyrum Cemetery. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Redd and his staff, especially his nurse Mary and IHC Hospice. Arrangements under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home.
