Grant L Western returned home to join his beloved wife on April 14, 2012, at the age of 88. Grant was born September 24, 1923, in Fillmore, Utah, the first son of Francis Marion F.M. and Myrtle Brunson Western. He was raised in Deseret, Utah, and graduated from Hinckley High School. Grant joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his honorable separation in 1946, Grant worked in Salt Lake City for a number of years before attending Utah State Agricultural College. He then went to work for the snow equipment division of Thiokol, which later became Logan Manufacturing. Grant married Lucile Billings in 1959 and they became the proud parents of four children. Grant was devoted to family and every holiday would find him packing the truck with various yard implements and garden produce and driving the family to Deseret to help his parents, and later his widowed mother, with whatever projects they needed help. Following retirement, Grant enjoyed full-time gardening and puttering around his yard, until his health would no longer permit him to do so. Grant loved to sing and raised his children to love music. He also had a knack for poetry and for many years wrote a column in his company's newsletter as the Old Sage. Grant is survived by three siblings, Melba Jacobson of Delta, Harold Mary Lou Western of Deseret, Wayne Delores Western of Sandy; four children, Sharon Scott Gollaher of Salt Lake City, LJ Western of Smithfield, Patti Brad Vanwagoner of Taylorsville, and Roger Shari Western of Wellsville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Evelyn Robison, and brother, Francis Carlyle Western. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at the meeting house located at 79 East 200 South, Smithfield, Utah. The funeral will be preceded by a family viewing at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Smithfield Cemetery. The family would like to thank Encompass Home Health and the staff at Logan Regional Hospital for their care of Grant during the last years of his life.
