George Clifford Ficklin

April 14, 1911 — February 12, 2009

Tremonton – George Clifford Ficklin, 97, beloved father and friend, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Bear River Valley Care Center. He rejoins his wife, son and many other departed loved ones.
George was born April 14, 1911 in Los Angeles, CA to George Ruel and Etta May Powell Ficklin. He was raised in Sioux City and Council Bluffs, IA. While in high school, he was encouraged to become a physician by his math teacher. He graduated in 1938 from Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, NE. He completed college and medical school at a time of great financial hardship during The Great Depression. He worked several years for the Union Pacific Railroad, and served as an officer with the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934.
He interned at Thomas D. Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT where he met his future wife, Arlene Jackson, who worked as a nurse. They were married January 20, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and spent 65 wonderful years together. Arlene passed away September 8, 2004.
George served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corp from 1941-1945 in the Pacific and European Theaters. After the war, he practiced medicine in Tremonton, UT until 1987 when he retired. He was a respected "country doctor" who made many house calls and delivered countless babies. He had been a member of the Tremonton Lions Club for over 50 years.
He has served faithfully in the LDS Church as a member of a bishopric, a stake president for 17 ½ years, a patriarch, and as President of the Logan LDS Temple. At the age of 89, he also served with his wife as missionaries in the San Antonio Mission.
George's "calling card" to his family and friends was a hug and "Remember that I love you". He has a deep love of his Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
He is survived by sons, Dr. Larry R. Ficklin Dawn of Washington, MO, George R. Ficklin Brenda of Vacaville, CA, Douglas B. Ficklin Wendi of Tremonton, and Kent C. Ficklin Carol of Johnson City, TN and by a daughter, Carole F. Cutler Ronald of Riverton, UT, and by many grand- and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife and a son, John T. Ficklin.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tremonton Stake Center, 660 North 300 East, Tremonton. A viewing will be held Sunday, February 15, 2009 from 5:00–7:30 p.m. and Monday from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the stake center. Interment in the Tremonton Riverview Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the care center and the Love Hospice personnel for the care they have given George.
