George Reynold Butterfield

George R. Butterfield, 85, passed away at the Logan Nursing and Rehab Center in Logan, UT on Thursday September 29, 2011 after brief illness due to a fall. George was born July 10, 1926 in Herriman, Utah to Henry and Bessie Butterfield. He was the fifth child out of eight brothers and one sister. George grew up in Herriman, Utah. He helped his mother out during his early years with the younger children while his older brothers went to school and he also had his chores on the farm. He attended the local grade school and graduated from Jordan High School in 1944. George had various careers in his life all of which he learned everything he could. He went to work in a mine in Butterfield canyon during the summer through high school. George followed his older brothers in the military serving his country in the Army Airforce. He served from January 1945 through October 1946. He was trained in Radio Operations. He had flight training Smyrna, TN He was unable to serve overseas because his three older brothers were already serving overseas. A fireman with the Union Pacific was his next career until the UP went to diesel fueled engines. George then went to Smithfield, UT where he worked with this brother James at Jimmy's drive inn. Which was later known as Marv's Cafe. He attended Utah State University in Carpentry. He met his wife, Irene Johnson at the café. After Irene graduated from high school in 1950 they were married November 10, 1950. George worked at Wonder Bread for thirty two years. He used his carpentry skills with the first house Irene and he bought in Logan. He always had a side job that he was working on. George was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has served in various positions. He served as a Scoutmaster in the Logan Third Ward. The rank of an Eagle Scout was important to him and he worked with the scouts to have this goal. George went on to build houses, two of which he built in Providence Utah for Irene and him. Irene resides in the second home he built. Community Service was important to George and he has served in various Lion's Clubs. He served for a year as Lion Club's Utah District Governor. He has participated in AARP, SCORE and was able to help out with senior citizens. George is survived by his wife, Irene and his children, Shelley Jerry Gill of Providence UT, Mitch Star Coulbrooke of Smithfield, UT, Holley Wayne Allen of Cove, UT. They have seven grandchildren and 14 great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bessie Butterfield, brothers, Blake, Herbert, James, Golden.and sister Grace. A grand daughter, Jasmine Marie Butterfield Jensen. The viewing will be held Sunday evening 6-8:00 pm at Nelson Funeral Home on 162 East 4th North, Logan, UT. The funeral services will be held Monday at noon in the Providence 2nd Ward, 355 Canyon Road approx. 340 S. 500 E.. Providence, UT, with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30. Burial will be held at the Providence cemetery. Special thanks to the staff of Logan Nursing and Rehab Center for their professional help and friendship.
