Fern Rogers Norris Heaps

March 16, 1911 — December 4, 2004

Fern Rogers Norris Heaps, 93, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2004 of natural causes. Fern was born in Portsmouth, England on March 16, 1911, but was raised on a farm in Paradise, Utah by her parents, Phoebe Orgill and Joseph Smith Norris. She graduated from South Cache High School where she was able to share her piano playing talent by accompanying dance bands. She married Orrie A. Heaps in The Salt Lake Temple on October 2, 1929. They made their home in Smithfield where they raised their six children and were active in community and church activities throughout their lives. Fern was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions within Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School, Young Womens and being an organist. She served a full-time mission for the LDS Church in San Jose, California and was an officiator in the Logan LDS Temple for several years. She worked diligently in genealogy research including extraction as well as her own family history. In recent years she crocheted and donated hundreds of leper bandages for the Church Humanitarian Program. Fern worked for many years in the Cache County School lunch program as a manager and retired while at the Summit Elementary School in Smithfield. She was an active member in the Smithfield Ladies Lion?s Club and other various community functions. She especially enjoyed playing the piano as well as making quilts and giving them to her children, grandchildren and friends. She is survived by her six children: DeVonna Lyman Tolman; Joycelyn Robert Wood; Lloyd Janel Heaps; Helen Glen Fairbourn; Jean Douglas Wood; David Rhea Heaps. She was proud to report that she had 27 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orrie, and all of her brothers and sisters, and one grandson. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Smithfield Third Ward chapel, 179 North, 100 East, Smithfield. A viewing will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
