Smithfield ? Farres Hurren Nyman, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Smithfield on March 7, 2002 following a lengthy illness. Farrres was born December 8, 1920 in North Logan, Utah to Andrew B. and Dessie Thurston Nyman. He grew up on the family farm in North Logan where he learned to thin sugar beets, tromp hay and pick apples. While completing his BA degree, Farres milked cows at Utah State to pay for his education. In 1939, Farres served a mission to Eastern Canada. When he returned home, he returned to USU to work on his Masters Degree. On January 14, 1942 he married LaVerna Ackroyd in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. Together they had eight children: Larold Nyman, Gerald Nyman, Ronald Nyman Laraine, Deon Van Dyke Bill, Debra Dawson Val, Gregory Nyman Sandie, Anne Harris-deceased Richard, and Mark Nyman Shari. They also have 35 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. World War II took him as Marine Transport Quarter Master for the USS Muliphen. Farres watched as the flag was planted on Iwo Jima. After the war, Farres ran a chicken hatchery. He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and after hatching and selling thousands of chicks for 24 years, he became a seminary teacher to bless the lives of thousands of students. During his life, Farres served his God and his country as a member of the high council for many years, high priest group leader, Bishop, explorer leader for 12 years, primary teacher, and mayor of North Logan. Farres also introduced and coached little league and pony league in North Logan to expose his sons to the game he loved. He was presented with the Silver Beaver Award in recognition of his devoted lifelong service to the Boy Scouts of America. Farres and LaVerna served a second mission at the Boise State University Institute where they loved the work and students. Farres is survived by his wife Verna, seven of their children, his brother, Monte Nyman and his sister Lorna Dewey. The family is deeply grateful for the 16 years of bonus time he had while carrying around an oxygen tank. Special thanks go to Dr. Brent Peterson, Dr. Steven Salisbury and Julie Beazer of Hospice for the extra-mile efforts they made to give Farres quality of life and keep him comfortable.
