Ethelyn Erickson Hodges

November 15, 1928 — March 23, 2008

Ethelyn Erickson Hodges passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at her home in Smithfield, Utah surrounded by her family. Ethelyn was born on November 15, 1928, in Smithfield, Utah to Erick William and Rachel Nobel Erickson. She was the fourth of ten children. After graduating from North Cache High school she worked at the Boy Scout office in Logan Utah, and at the Church offices in Salt Lake City, before serving a mission for the LDS Church to Texas/Louisiana in 1949. Throughout her life, she worked both in the home and occasionally outside the home. She especially enjoyed her work as a Dental Assistant. She married Carroll O. Hodges on June 4, 1952, in the Logan LDS Temple and then made their first home in Northern California on the Hodges ranch near Miranda, California. During their married lives they lived in many places including Logan, Utah; Nancy, France; Seattle Washington; Kaysville, Utah; Sunset, Utah, Lake Charles, Louisiana; Spring, Texas; Santa Rosa, California; and Smithfield, Utah. Ethelyn enjoyed all the places they lived and was quick to turn each new house into a home. She and her husband, Carroll, served in the LDS Micronesia Guam Mission on the islands of Rota and Siapan in 1994. Ethelyn loved serving the people and enjoyed learning about the islands and their unique cultures. She was an active and faithful member of the LDS church serving in the Primary as President and a teacher, Smithfield Stake Primary Secretary, Sunday School teacher, Relief Society Visiting Teacher, and Family Records Extraction Program.
Her first priority was being a devoted wife and mother. She had a full life of lovingly serving and was always very patient and kind to those around her. Ethelyn always worried more for others then for herself. She is survived by her husband, Carroll O. Hodges of Smithfield, two sons, Brent Anna of Altus, Oklahoma; Brian of Smithfield; one daughter, Jillynn Nameer Youssef of Spring, Texas; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; her siblings, twin sister, Evelyn Jay Gubler, Elaine Denzil Coleman, Noble Ila Mae Erickson, all of Smithfield; Vincent Kay Erickson, Hyde Park, Utah currently serving in the California San Francisco Mission, and Terry LaDawn Erickson of Fair Oaks, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Bessie Bernice, Roma Andersen, Ruth Jones, and brother, Roy Erickson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Smithfield 12th Ward Chapel, 640 North 200 East, Smithfield. Friends and family may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Internment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
