Ethel Poppleton Williamson Greene

May 26, 1915 — February 14, 2008

Ethel Poppleton Williamson Greene, 92, passed away on February 14, 2008 the 74th anniversary of her marriage in the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation of causes incident to age. In her last years she fought a courageous fight. She was born May 26, 1915, in Wellsville, Utah, the seventh child of eight born to William Maughan Williamson and Mary Riggs Poppleton Williamson. Although she spent her first years in Wellsville, her family moved to a farm north of Smithfield when Ethel was six. Life on the farm was one of happiness combined with hard work. Ethel married Ralph Read Greene on February 14, 1934, establishing their home in Smithfield. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. There they raised five children, JaNae Milt Friedli of Payson, Utah; Dee Janae Greene of Chubbuck, Idaho; Lana Robinson of Smithfield; Lynn Judy Greene of Logan; and Jay Kris Greene of Smithfield. Together Ethel and Ralph enjoyed many activities including traveling, gardening, Blue Sox baseball games, and visiting with friends and family. Their marriage of 59 years was one of love and understanding. Ralph passed away on August 18, 1993. Following Ralph's death, Ethel continued to live in the old family home. After she fell in December, 2006 and broke her hip, she moved to the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation in January, 2007. There were many things that Ethel loved. Watching baseball, basketball, or other sporting events was one of her favorite activities. On almost any evening, she could be found watching a sports game on television and at the same time listening to a local sports team game on the radio while doing her handiwork. Many people are fortunate in receiving pieces of her handiwork. She made beautiful quilts, afghans, doilies, and items from plastic canvas. She enjoyed walking and working in her garden. She was an excellent cook. For many years, she was a lunch cook at Summit School. Most of all she loved her family. She always supported her children and their families in their many activities. Those who associated with her enjoyed her sense of humor and found her fun to be around. She greatly encouraged and enriched many lives. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in Relief Society and Primary callings and she, along with her husband, served as a Name Extraction Missionary and a Temple Missionary for many years. Ethel is survived by her five children and their spouses, 16 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Griffin of Logan; a brother-in-law, Woodrow Nelson, Woodland, California; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Waters, Burley, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson, Jonathan Shupe Greene, three sisters, Edith Coburn, Celia Cronquist, and Aileen Scott, and three brothers, Floyd, Elmer, and Vernon Williamson. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Smithfield North Stake Center, 155 West 400 North, Smithfield, Utah at 11:30 a.m. with Bishop Clair Larkin conducting. Friends may call at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield on Monday evening, February 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and at the stake center on Tuesday morning from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . The family wishes to express appreciation to the excellent and caring staff of the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation, Dr. Bruce Godderidge, Dr. Todd Brown, and staff of Smithfield Clinic. Sincere appreciation is also expressed to the faithful and loving members of the Smithfield 9th Ward who have continued to visit and encourage Mom long after she moved to the nursing home.
