Erwin Lehman

December 30, 1925 — May 29, 2013

Erwin "Erv" Lehman died Wednesday May 29, 2013, at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he was recovering from a broken leg. He was surrounded by his loving family. Dad was born in Logan, Utah, on Dec. 30, 1925, to Mary Louise Teuscher and Ulrich Lehman Jr. He was raised in the "Little Berlin" area of Logan on 900 North. Dad loved telling us the stories of growing up in a less complicated world, doing the things that boys loved to do. One of our favorite stories was when he grabbed on to the back of a car and enjoyed a great sleigh ride all the way up to Ricks Spring in Logan Canyon.
Dad served in the Navy during World War II. He quit school and lied about his age to get into the service. He wanted to serve in the Merchant Marines because he liked their uniforms. However, when they got there they saw the guys working in their dungarees. He and his friend decided they didn't want to wear those, so they joined the Navy in hopes of wearing Navy Blue! Dad ended up going back to high school, and graduated the same year as his daughter Debby.
Dad was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in several callings in the church, including as Elder's quorum president and many, many years as High Priest group leader. One of the highlights of his life was being able to serve in the temple as a veil worker. Dad lived his testimony, and because of his faithfulness he was abundantly blessed by the Lord. Mom and Dad held to the theory that they were only the custodians of the blessings the Lord sent to them and took every opportunity to provide for the needs of those around them. They were always doing some secret act of kindness for someone in need. Mom and Dad loved to decorate their house during the holidays. Their house was the Snoopy dog house on the island. They even won the Logan City house decorating contest one year.
Dad worked many years for Stucki-Miller in roofing, drywall and acoustics. He was a hard worker and was proud to be involved in the building and remodeling of many structures in Cache Valley, including the remodeling of the Logan Temple. Dad worked in construction for more than 30 years before starting his own company. He and his son-in-law Alan and another friend Terry Cronquist started Island Heights Construction in 1984. Dad worked hard to ensure the success of that company. He finally retired in 2005 when he turned 80 years old.
Dad married Pearl Eck and to that union was born a son and a daughter. They were later divorced. Dad met the love of his life, Joyce "N" Hall, and they were married in the Logan Temple on May 26, 1950. They made their home on the Island in Logan, where they raised their six children. Dad is survived by his children, Lynette Duke Williams of San Antonio, Texas, Valerie Alan Ringer of River Heights, Utah, Cynthia Blair Thompson of Providence, Utah, Kerry Becky Lehman of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Charlotte David Maughan of Avon, Utah, and Terrie Marie Bryant of Eagle Mountain, Utah. Dad is also survived by 30 Grandchildren and 42 Great grandchildren with five more on the way, and by his little Westie buddy, McDuff!
Dad was preceded in death by his wife, a son, David Lamont Jensen, a daughter, Debra Joyce Lehman Maddern, a son-in-law, Daniel C. Maddern, a granddaughter, Angela Joyce Ringer, and a great-grandson Zachary Tucker Petersen. He was also preceded by his parents and all of his siblings, Arnold Lehman, Ida Lehman Peterson, and Lucille Lehman Young. We would like to extend thanks to Dr. Stones for the care he gave to our Dad and a special thanks to the staff at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They always treated Dad with such great love, kindness, and respect, which allowed him a degree of dignity at such a difficult time of his life. We consider them angels and will be forever grateful for the love they showed to our Dad. We will miss the friendships we formed during this time.
Funeral services will be noon Friday, June 7, 2013, in the Logan 7th Ward Chapel, 565 E. 100 South, Logan. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. and prior to services, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery with military honors. Funeral direction is under Nelson Funeral Home.
