Emeline Watts

September 29, 1917 — November 26, 2010

Rachel Emeline Young Watts, age 93, died on November 26, 2010 in Logan, Utah. Emeline was born on September 29, 1917 in Lewiston, Cache County, Utah, the sixth child of James Floyd and Helen Margaret Clark Young.
Emeline attended elementary school in Grace, Idaho, where she was recognized for her spelling and poetic abilities. After completing her freshman year in Grace High School, she moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where she stayed with her uncle's family for four years, working in their home and dairy business while completing high school. She graduated from the LDS Seminary and received many scholastic honors, including being chosen as a member of the National Honor Society upon graduation in 1936 from Pocatello High School. After completing her freshman year at the University of Idaho, Southern Branch in 1937, Emeline came to Logan and attended the Utah State Agricultural College until her marriage.
She was married on February 11, 1938 to Austin LeMoyne Watts in the Logan Temple. After the birth of their first son, John, the family moved to Carey, Idaho, where LeMoyne taught music in the high school. Other places they lived were Rexburg, Victor, Ucon, and Lincoln, Idaho, while LeMoyne taught at Ammon and Iona High Schools and managed a music store in Idaho Falls. They moved back to Logan in 1949. During this time, five more children were added to the family.
Emeline was a lifetime member, teacher, and leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the Relief Society where she was a class leader for many years, a visiting teacher most of her life, and counselor in the presidency, Young Women's class leader, MIA secretary, Sunday School secretary, and Primary teacher for many years.
Emeline sang in the Relief Society Singing Mothers for ward fast meetings and stake conferences for many years. She performed in duets and trios, singing in funerals over the years. Since she was 16 years old, she was always a contributing voice in the ward choirs and the president of this group on several occasions..
When the Logan 23rd Ward, Mount Logan Stake, was formed from a division of the 7th and 8th Wards, Emeline served as Senior Sunday School secretary for nine years from 1961-1970. In 1971, because of her capabilities from this prior experience, she was hired as a clerical worker in the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Utah State University, where she performed many responsibilities until retiring in 1982.
Emeline was especially proud of the various accomplishments of her large and very industrious, involved, and talented posterity, whom she encouraged to love the Lord and follow the commandments. She was very patriotic, enjoying the privilege of voting, love of her country, and recognizing its God-given freedom. She grieved over man's inhumanity to man wherever it was practiced and stayed close to the Lord in prayer.
She kept in touch with her large extended family by telephone, letter, and visits.
