Elma Gayle Holmgren

November 9, 1916 — February 2, 2004

Bear River City - Elma Gayle Holmgren, 87, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2004. She was born November 9, 1916 in Bear River City, Utah a daughter of Rueben Oleen and Meda Marie Christensen Holmgren. She graduated from Bear River High School and Utah State Agricultural College. After college she taught school in Paul and Oakley, Idaho. In 1941 she moved to San Francisco where she worked for the Federal Reserve Bank and the Coast Guard. During W.W.II she joined the American Red Cross and served overseas in Italy, Germany, and Korea. She also worked for the U. S. State Department in Washington D.C., Norway and Pakistan. She returned to teaching in 1955. She taught English at Granite High School in Salt Lake City; Bellflower High School in Bellflower, California and Westminster High School in Westminster, California. She retired in 1976 and returned to Utah in 1985, living in Ogden until 2002 when she moved to Bear River City. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served in several teaching and music positions. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
Surviving is her sister, Ruth Lorraine Holmgren, Tremonton; two brothers, Ralph Clayne Holmgren, Provo, Gordon R. Phyllis Holmgren; Bear River City; five nieces and one nephew, Gwen Keith Thomas, Shelton, WA; Wendy David Douglas, El Centro, CA; Robyn David Richards, Henefer; Tamra Harold Porter, Mazeppa, MN; Chad Lori Holmgren and Emilee Erik Nebl, Bear River City Also surviving are fourteen grandnieces and nephews and seven great grandnieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, at the Bear River LDS Church. Friends and family may call on Saturday from11:30 to 12:30 prior to the funeral at the church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gayle's name to the Utah State University College of Education, c/o USU Development Office, 1420 Old Main Hill, Logan, Utah 84322-1420.
