Elizabeth 'Libbie' Riggs Stoddard Gittins

Elizabeth Libbie Riggs Stoddard Gittins age 96, Smithfield Utah, returned to her Heavenly home on Dec. 28, 2012 at the Logan regional hospital following a massive stroke. She was born in Wellsville, Utah March 4, 1916 as the first daughter of William and Emma Lea Rue Stoddard. She met her eternal companion Robert Bob Gittins on the Galloping Goose Train between North Cache and South Cache High schools and was married on June 14, 1934 in the Logan Utah LDS temple. She graduated from South Cache High School May 1934. She was a 4-H leader for 20 yrs providing leadership to numerous young men. She taught these men the winning way. At least 10 of them went to Chicago as top winners in state, 2 went to Portland , 1 went to Bismark North Dakota, 1 to Michigan and several went to Fort Collins Colorado, 8 received scholarships for collage. She was also a member of the 4-H council for 7 yrs and served as secretary. She completed several Red Cross, Standard First Aid, and Home Care of the sick classes. She took care of her mother-in-law who was bedridden for 6 yrs. She helped with the city booth at the county fair even before the Farm Bureau asked cities to put them up, winning 1 sweepstakes, and many blue ribbons and some red ribbons. She always entered her home canning into the county fair and received countless blue ribbons and national awards for her jams and jellies. She also received the Kerr canner of the year award. She was a member of the Book Luree Club for 41 yrs and has helped the club build many floats for Health Days. She was very active in her LDS ward and held several positions, including the young men and the young women's organizations, she loved teaching the youth. She Served an LDS Mission in the Iowa Des Moines Mission from 1984 to 1985. She helped her husband run a 40 acre farm and milked 22 cows until his death in 1985. She worked at Smithfield Implement for 53 yrs, where she just recently retired 2 weeks ago. She was a loving, caring person who was always looking for ways to help others. She was the mother of 4 children Eugene Claudelle, Marlin Linda, Rodney Jana and Nelda Geary Bybee. She had high expectations and helped her family set high goals for themselves. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Bob, her daughter Nelda Bybee and her son Marlin and sisters Eva McMurdie, Grace Anderson, LaVerne Iverson, and Nelda Stoddard and is survived by her brother Dee Stoddard. She has 15 Grand children, 40 Great-Grand children, 33 Great-Great-Grand children, and 1 Great-Great-Great-Grand child. Funeral services are to be held Friday January 4, 2013, at 12 noon in the Smithfield 2nd Ward Church building , 675 West 200 North, in Smithfield. Friends and family may call at the Nelson Funeral home 85 South Main Smithfield on Thursday January 3, 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm and Friday January 4, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am prior to the funeral at the 2nd ward church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the LDS missionary fund.
