Elda Hale Miller

June 18, 1918 — April 2, 2014

Elda Hale Miller
1918 - 2014 On April 2, 2014, our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Elda Hale Miller, returned to her heavenly home to be in the joyful presence of many loved ones who had preceded her. Elda's passing was as peaceful as the temple on the hill, which she loved to watch from her window at the Williamsburg Retirement Center in Logan, Utah. She was 95 years of age and a stalwart example to us all.
Elda and her twin sister Ada were born on June 18, 1918 in Afton, Wyoming to Benjamin Walter and Susan Idella Cazier Hale.
She married her Star Valley High School sweetheart, Harold Edward Miller, in the Salt Lake Temple on June 18, 1936. The happy couple lived in Ogden for several years and then later moved to Richmond, Utah. They were blessed with 8 children, 46 grandchildren, and 109 great grandchildren, and 40 great, great grandchildren. Each one is precious to them.
Elda appreciated the beauties of nature. She loved feeding baby lambs as a child, soft kittens, and watching the birds. She made it a habit of looking for the good in others and noticing the positive things in life. She was energetic, organized, creative, and learned to live within her means. She made delicious homemade bread and sewed her own clothes. Elda enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, playing the piano, genealogy research, and serving in the temple. Compassionate service has always brought her joy. Elda found many ways to serve in her community. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in the Relief Society, Primary, and Cub Scouts. Elda was a member of the ward choir and sang with the Richmond Singing Mothers. During a period of ten years, she volunteered as a data-entry missionary, where she recorded information from birth and marriage records, which is a valuable help to many genealogists today.
In 1993, Elda served a mission in the Logan Temple. In 1995, at age 77, she accepted a mission call to the Pocatello, Idaho Mission to help in the Rexburg Family History Center. After returning home, she served as a family history consultant and ward librarian. Elda was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and developed a great appreciation for the faith, courage, and sacrifice of her hard-working ancestors while compiling inspirational histories about their lives.
Education was important to Elda, who studied and acted upon an earnest desire to continue learning throughout her life. She encouraged her children to develop their talents, to be thankful for their blessings, to be honest in their dealings, and to be faithful in living gospel principles.
In August 2001, Elda moved into the Williamsburg Retirement Center, where she made many wonderful friends whom she dearly loved. They helped and watched over each other.
Elda is survived by her children Donna William Akers; Lynn Arlene Miller; Jerry Gayle Miller; Shirley Geary Hansen; Janice Calvin Swendsen; and Charles Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold; sons Edward and Eldon Miller; daughters-in-law Laura Miller and Bonnie Miller; grandsons Patrick Miller; Michael and Gary Swendsen; great granddaughter Ana Anderson; brothers Charles, Edward, Willard Hale; sisters Izora Hoopes, Ada Aullman, and Melva Kidman. Funeral Services will be held at noon on Tuesday April 8th, in the Richmond, Utah Stake Center 135 West Main. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. An evening viewing will also be held on Monday night, April 7th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home 162 East 400 North, Logan. Interment will be at the Richmond Cemetery.
The family wants to thank Scott, Dan, Denise, Rachel, and all their wonderful Williamsburg staff, as well as Cathy, Merilee, and Heidi of AFI Homecare and Hospice for their loving service to our mother.
