SMITHFIELD ? Edward E. Tompkins, died July 10, 2004 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born December 27, 1924 in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Edward and Mary Tompkins. He served in the submarine service during World War II in the South Pacific for 3 ½ years.
In 1948 he married Arleine Gartner. They have two sons, Edward in Alaska and Thomas in Hyde Park.
He joined the Atlantic City Fire Department in 1949. He was the third generation to serve. He retired after 27 years. Upon retiring he moved to Mendon, later moving to Smithfield. He enjoyed re-modeling houses and making furniture. Hobbies were fishing, hunting and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Arleine and his two sons, 5 grandsons and two granddaughters. He was preceded in by his parents.
Ed disliked traditional viewings and funerals. He desired cremation. There will be a Celebration of Life at his home, 244 West Center, Smithfield on August 1, 2004 from 3 to 8 p.m. His family invites his friends to gather and share food and memories.
