Duane William Archibald

June 11, 1911 — November 9, 2004

Duane William Archibald, 93, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2004, in Ogden, Utah. He lived a long and productive life and will be missed by many. He was born in Garland, Utah, June 11, 1911 to Alexander H. Archibald and Laura Olivia Thompson. He was the sixth of ten children; all of who have preceded him in death, with the exception of his youngest sister, Gwen Lavender of Ogden. He married Nettie Marie Hunsaker, February 13, 1937. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Nettie passed away December 18, 1990. Duane taught elementary school in Brigham City, Honeyville and Garland. He taught English and History at Bear River High School for many years. During the summer months and after retiring from teaching, he worked as a painter. He loved many sports, but baseball was a particular favorite. He played and coached baseball for several years. In his later years, he enjoyed pitching horseshoes. He excelled at this sport and won many trophies and titles including Utah and Idaho State Champion. He also loved camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, and horseback riding. Prior to WWII, Duane served in the National Guard for ten years. He served on the Garland City Council, and was also a member of the Garland Lion's Club and Fire Department. He served in many capacities in the scouting organization, including Chairman of the Golden Spike District. Duane was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many ward and stake callings. As a high priest, he served as a teacher, a bishop and a high councilman. He is survived by six of his seven children: Renee Don Coziar, Dr. Lyle Roslyn Archibald, Susan John Ben Iverson, Hal Archibald, Scott Archibald and Paul Sherri Archibald. His oldest son, Steven, passed away in 1991. He has 29 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Garland Tabernacle located at 140 West Factory St., Garland with Bishop Ray Manning officiating. Friends may call on Friday, November 12, 2004, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home located at 111 North 100 East, Tremonton or Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Garland Tabernacle.
