Dorothy Nicholas Whitaker

Dorothy Nicholas Holland Whitaker passed away at her home, Sunday, May 23, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. She had just celebrated her 85th birthday with a surprise party given by her family who loved her so much.
Dorothy was born in Willard, Utah, on April 5, 1919, the sixth of seven children of Jesse and Grace Brunker Nicholas. She was reared by hard working parents on the eastside of Promontory, Utah, where she loved the outdoors and riding horses. She attended schools in Promontory and Brigham City, Utah.
She married LeRoy Joseph Holland on June 11, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah, Temple on May 21, 1941. They lived in East Garland for a short time and raised their children on the family farm in Tremonton. LeRoy died on September 26, 1985.
Dorothy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a Visiting Teacher, Primary teacher, coordinator for the Junior Sunday School, counselor in the Mutual, secretary of the Sunday School and Relief Society. She was currently serving as a Sunshine Lady for the 10th Ward. For many years, she served as the quilt supervisor for the Relief Society of the Tremonton 10th Ward. She enjoyed handiwork and made her grandchildren and many friends an afghan. She will be remembered for her love of music and playing upbeat tunes on her organ, never having a lesson. She worked for the Box Elder County School District as a cook for 20 years. Her greatest joy and accomplishment was that of her family. She enjoyed her friends and neighbors and found joy in serving others. She was always a lady.
On January 17, 1991, she married Arnold Whitaker in Brigham City, Utah. Together they spent many hours on his ranch in Promontory and enjoyed horseback riding and attending rodeos.
She is survived by her children Glenn Becky, Tremonton, Utah; Boyd Gwen, Kalispell, Montana; Leon Marilynn, Millville, Utah; and Marie Terrell Sorensen, American Falls, Idaho. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and a special niece Tamara Eddie Nicholas Dayton, Cokeville, Wyoming, brothers: Grant Muriel Nicholas Honeyville, Utah; and Wayne Eileen Nicholas, Garland, Utah and a sister-in-law, Irene Adams. Also surviving are her husband, Arnold Whitaker, and his daughters, Laraine Delbridge, Valoy Greg Warburton, and Gloria Whitaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Thera, and brothers Joseph, Jesse, and Nephi.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2004 at 12:00 noon at the Tremonton South Stake Center located at 1150 South Tremont Street, Tremonton. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home located at 111 North 100 East, Tremonton and also from 10:00-11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
Interment will be at the Brigham City Cemetery.
