Dorothy Ruth Chambers Harrison, surrounded by her family, passed away on Nov. 11, 2018 in Hyrum, Utah. Ruth was born to George and Tacy Chambers on April 21, 1929, in Smithfield, Utah, which is where she spent her childhood. Growing up, she loved performing, singing, and art. However, she could also be found alongside her father thinning sugar beets, tromping hay, or riding a horse. She was preceded in death by infant daughter, Tamera Harrison, and her seven siblings: Ferris Chambers (Ruth), Alice Poppleton (Garnel), Lennis Chambers (Drue), Aileen Minkler (Ray), Mary Bair (Scott), Tacy Ballam (Oral), and Faye Shupe (LeGrande).
Ruth served a mission to Western Canada which is where she met Elder Deane Harrison and where they impressed each other with their hard work. She graduated from Utah State University, taught Home Ec., P.E., and coached the girl’s soft ball team at Lewiston Jr. High. She married Ronald Deane Harrison in the Logan Temple on December 20, 1952. Together for 66 years, they lived in many places in Utah and around the world while raising six children: Ruth Petersen (Phil), Renate Brunsvik (Fred), Ron Harrison, Roger Harrison (Carole), Richard Harrison (Kim), Reid Harrison (Cyndi). They have 35 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Ruth supported her children in many activities in school and church. She encouraged her children to develop educationally and musically which legacy has reached down to her great grandchildren. She was active in her community where she served on the City Council, Library Board, PTA, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and as a 4-H leader.
Ruth and Deane were devoted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They served two mission together; one to Zambia, and the other to the Philippines. They served 13 years in the Logan Temple. Ruth served in many of the church organizations but especially loved Relief Society where she served as president several times.
Ruth, hardworking, organized, and strong willed, always looked for beauty in the world and had many passions which included: missionary work, cheering at sporting events, home making, musical and dramatic performances, traveling, sewing, quilting bedspreads for children and grandchildren, crocheting afghans for grandchildren, oil painting, reading, gardening, grandchildren, and sunsets.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Hyrum South Stake Center, 600 S. 200 E. A viewing will also be held at Hyrum South Stake Center on Friday, November 16, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Saturday, November 17 from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M.
