Long Beach, Ca ? Dorothy Ranee Griffiths Edwards Jacobson, 82, passed from this life on Wednesday April 23, 2003 at Saint Mary?s Hospital in Long Beach, California, from complications of congestive heart failure, with her loving husband, Grant, and a close family friend, Tony Bello, at her bedside. She was born June 26, 1920 in Smithfield, Cache County, Utah to William Henry Griffiths and Ethel LaVeda Pilkington Griffiths. She was the first of their two daughters. She was raised in Smithfield and educated in schools in Smithfield and Richmond, Utah. She married Don Jr Edwards, son of Don Carlos Edwards and Minnie Alice Howlett Edwards on July 7, 1941. That same year, the Edwards family opened Don Carlos Bar-Be-Que on 872 South Main in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dorothy worked there as a carhop, a waitress and a cashier. It closed in 1952. At that time, the Edwards family opened the first Arctic Circle Restaurant in Salt Lake City at 135 East 9th South. Dorothy and Don were divorced in 1952. They have one daughter, Judith Ann Edwards Carter. Dorothy married Howard Grant Jacobson in 1966. He is the son of John E Jacobson and Dora Grant Jacobson from Salt Lake City, Utah and later, Long Beach, California. Grant went to school in Salt Lake and moved to California in 1946 after his service in World War II. He went to work for General Motors assembly plant in South Gate. He worked his way up to senior specifications engineer and retired in 1980. Dorothy loved living in California. She has lived in Long Beach since 1956. She loved the ocean. Her apartment was on Ocean Boulevard, where she could hear the foghorns and the ocean waves. She was very artistic and talented. Once she had the opportunity to work for Walt Disney Studios. She loved oriental things and spent many hours painting and doing gold leafing and making beautiful things for their apartment. She was a kind person who greeted everyone with a big smile. She made friends easily and for the most part, she kept them. While she has faced many sad times in her life and faced many challenges, over all she has had a long and happy life. She missed her father so much for a long time. She will be happy to see him again and her favorite Aunt Mable Cantwell, as well as many family members and friends. We hope she is at peace. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The family wishes to thank the Mormon missionaries and neighbors for their prayers and blessings.
