Don Alfred White

November 5, 1922 — July 26, 2007

Don Alfred Alf White 84, our beloved grandfather, father, and spouse passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2007. Alf was born the tenth of twelve children to Jacob Jeremiah and Julia Ellen Potts White on November 5th, 1922 in Collinston, Utah. His family moved to Garland where he went to school and graduated from Bear River High School. Alf was very active in sports, holding two Desert News Pentathlon records for many years and receiving All State Football status. He was awarded a football scholarship to Weber College after graduation but that era of his life was cut short when he was drafted into World War II. Serving in the China Burma India Theater from 1942-1945, he was proud of the fact that he had traveled around the world. After he was discharged from the service he married Leone Macfarlane on Aug 31, 1945. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple, and together had four children. Alf and Leone resided in Garland and Preston, Idaho for a brief time before moving to River Heights where they raised their family. Here Alf was an active member of the River Heights Wards and the River Heights Lions Club. For years he was the River Heights ?Santa Claus? and took pleasure in this special service. He worked for many valley auto dealers as Parts and Service manager spending the last 27 years at Ellis Equipment. He was always quick to help neighbors and widows in need. Leone and Alf enjoyed supporting the Cache Valley Arts together. They were also avid Aggie fans. In November 2000 his companion of 55 years, Leone, passed away. He was blessed to marry Margaret Fletcher on August 9th, 2001 and they have had six happy years together. Alf?s family thanks Margaret for her untiring service and unconditional love for their father and grandfather, especially during this difficult past month. Alf is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leone, his daughter Sue, great-granddaughter Elizabeth White; sisters Aileen Simmons, Olive Durphey, Idella White, June Pinder, and Beth Hansen; and brothers Thomas Henry, Dallas Jacob, and John Ray. He is survived by his wife Margaret White, and three sons Don Alfred Rosemary of Liberty, Utah, Jon Mark Darlene of Cove, Utah, and Val Reed Debbie of Oakland, California and son-in-law Jeff Taylor Barbara of Preston, Idaho. Also living is his brother James White Zenna of Garland, Utah and two sisters Lola Guyon of Paige, Arizona, and Dorothy Jensen of Salt Lake City, Utah. Surviving also are step-children Terrell Fletcher Trish of Mendon, Utah, Saesha Stokes of Mendon, Alisha Zilles Tracy of River Heights, Krista Fletcher of Salt Lake City, Andra Reeder Cody of Wellsville, Utah and Chad Fletcher Camille of Kuna, Idaho and brother-in-law, Tom Gensler Karen of Omaha, NE. Alf loved his immediate and extended family and enjoyed reunions and holidays. He has a large legacy of children and adults who affectionately call him Grandpa White. He has 21 grandchildren, 21 step-grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren. Until his last month Alf was physically active and enjoyed working with Margaret in their beautiful yard. He was a kind man, a man of integrity, a handsome man, and a gentleman to the very end. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him as he returns to his Father in Heaven. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Providence Stake Center, 800 S. 600 E, River Heights, Utah. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2007 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E. 400 N. Logan and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Church prior to services on Tuesday. Interment services will be held in the Providence City Cemetery in River Heights. In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting that a donation be made to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Alf?s name.
