David Phillips

David L. Phillips was finally reunited with his eternal companion on May 12, 2011. He was born in Smithfield, Utah, July 30, 1925, to Levi David and Ella Johnson Phillips. After his father passed away when David was seven he was raised by, his mother, and sister, Mariam Phillips Cooper, Aunt Zina Hall, and cousin Ella Johnson Larson. David was educated in the Cache County School System graduating from North Cache High School in 1943. David learned the skill of operating the projector at the main theater in Smithfield, this skill served him well, while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II at Tiburon, California. He was the projectionist for the theater on base. After returning to Cache Valley he enrolled at Utah State Agriculture College, and pursued a degree in Industrial Technology graduating in 1950. While attending U.S.A.C. he met the love of his life, Betty Jane Daines, They were married on February 7, 1947, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They made their home in Logan, and then permanently in Smithfield where they raised their four children. David chose the life of a General Building Contractor. He first started a business with a friend, Russ Kearl. Starting Kearl & Phillips Company. Later, David established his own construction company going on to build many homes in Cache Valley. He did work on the USU campus, built and remodeled commercial and church buildings. David retired in 1986 and has traveled with his wife, Betty to various places. The trip to Alaska where they spent 2 months wandering the wilderness was a highlight. David and Betty always made sure the children were taken care of and enjoyed going on many vacations. David has supported his children and grandchildren in many different ways. Other past and current activities include: attending Sky View High School and Utah State University basketball and football games, bowling, snowmobiling, wood working, gardening, and most of all enjoyed golfing with his buddies where he achieved a "Hole In One" at Birch Creek Golf Course. He served as a welfare clerk in the Smithfield 2nd Ward and is currently serving as a recommend clerk at the Logan LDS T ernple. He is a past member of the zoning board for Smithfield City. Survived by children Joseph Karen Phillips of Smithfield, Utah; Jane Dennis Martin of Payson, Utah; Todd & Connie Phillips of Benton City, Washington; and Reed & Lisa Phillips of Riverdale, Utah. They have 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 18 at the Smithfield 1st/2nd Ward Chapel, 175 South 100 West in Smithfield. A viewing will be held from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, May 17 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main in Smithfield, and from 9:30-10:30 prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com
