Conrad Harry Mather

March 25, 1915 — March 29, 2009

Conrad Harry Mather, 94, Smithfield, died in Logan, Utah, on March 29, 2009, from causes incident to age. He was born March 25, 1915, in Smithfield, Utah, a son of William Mather and Bertha Eleanor Done. In his youth, he helped on the family farm, working the fields, milking cows, and performing other necessary chores. Known by the nickname of "Willie" during his younger years, Conrad graduated from North Cache High School where he played clarinet in the band and was a fullback on the football team. He attended Utah State Agricultural College taking machinist classes. He met Erma Johnson at North Cache. They were married on September 29, 1936, in the Logan LDS Temple. They lived most of their married years in the home they purchased in Smithfield in 1945. Conrad has missed his sweetheart since her death in 2005. Conrad worked as a machinist for Amalgamated Sugar and Del Monte, hauled milk to Cache Valley Dairy, farmed his land west of Smithfield, and operated a small family dairy. He enjoyed traveling, railroads, and watching the Utah Jazz. Most especially, he and Erma enjoyed spending time with family and friends. They had a special love for their grandchildren. Many wonderful memories were made through family activities, reunions, and Erma's excellent meals. He was a High Priest in the LDS Church, serving in the priesthood and auxiliary organizations, and as an ordinance worker at the Logan LDS Temple. Conrad is survived by three children, Glayd Sharon, Gary Rosa, and Guila Jeffrey; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice. His wife, Erma, a son, Garth Sharee, and two grandchildren, Gary Jay and Sarahane, preceded him in death. Conrad's nephews Bill and Jack also lived with them while completing high school. The family would like to thank the Williamsburg Retirement Home for their kind assistance and care of their father and grandfather. They would also like to thank all of the friends and neighbors for their loving care and companionship over the years. A viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, on Thursday at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main Street, Smithfield; and from 12:30 to 1:30 pm on Friday, April 3, at the Smithfield 1st Ward Chapel, 175 South 100 West, Smithfield. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm in the chapel. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery following the services.
