Colleen Munns Haws

September 29, 1931 — March 3, 2023

Colleen Munns Haws died March 3, 2023 at the Williamsburg Retirement Community in Logan, Utah. She was 91.

Colleen was born September 29, 1931, in Garland, Utah, the youngest of 5 children, to Frank Munns and Mabel Udy Munns. She graduated from Bear River High School in 1949, and attended Utah State for a year, where she met a handsome young man on a blind date. Dale Haws and Colleen were married on September 15, 1950, in the Idaho Falls Temple. Together they shared an adventurous life with their six children. They moved several times for Dale’s military service during the Korean War, then spent time at Iowa State and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where Dale completed his PhD in medical and veterinary entomology.

Colleen and Dale’s first work assignment was in Kabul Afghanistan in 1962. Quite an amazing act of bravery and courage for a young family. Colleen loved people! No one was a stranger. She loved to talk, meet people and they always became fast friends. During their 57-year marriage, Dale and Colleen raised 5 children, while living in Afghanistan, India, Brazil, the Philippines, Pakistan and Egypt. Colleen wrote a manuscript chronicling the family travels and adventures as they lived at 46 different addresses, called “Change of Address: Please Forward.”

Colleen was active in the LDS church. She would always seek out to find where church services were held. Sometimes Church was held in a family living room, other times they were held in a rented house. She was an organist and chorister at different times. Colleen loved to go to the Temple and attended the temple regularly. She was very interested in genealogy and wrote a detailed family history that included many pictures, titled: “A Book for Our Children and Grandchildren”. She also worked with her sister-in-law Gwen Haws to complete and publish the Jesse Haws family history.

Dale and Colleen returned to the States, retired in Arizona, and lived their remaining years in River Heights, Utah. To stay active, Colleen became a member of the Daughters of the Pioneers as both her grandparents were early pioneers that settled in Northern Utah. Colleen also was active in the Parkinson’s group in Logan. Colleen’s final years were spent at Williamsburg Retirement Community. Thank you to all the care providers over the years, she appreciated you so very much. Colleen lived a long and happy life. She smiled often. She joked and made those around her laugh. She proved that one could eat treats and do mild exercise and still live to be 91!

Colleen was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Carol; her adult son, Kirk Dale Haws, her husband, Leo Dale Haws; and all her siblings: Gene Munns, Eldon Munns, Annie Lee, and Boyd Munns. She is survived by 4 children: LaDawn Haws, Chico, CA; Robert Brent Haws (Connie), Providence, Utah; Julie Haws Barker (Shaun), Providence Utah; Sandra Ashworth, Nampa, ID; and 15 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, UT. Services will be held to celebrate the life of Colleen M. Haws on March 25th with a viewing from 10:30 am – 11:30 am followed by funeral services at 12:00 pm. She will be laid to rest at the Garland Cemetery next to her husband, Dale.
