Smithfield ? Clarice Perkes Downs, 75, passed away peacefully May 4, 2004 at her home in Smithfield. She was born June 18, 1928 in Hyde Park, Utah to Leo Daines and Ordis Waite Perkes. She was the oldest of seven children. She attended schools in Cache Valley and graduated from North Cache High School. She married Lewis V. Downs September 18, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple for time and all eternity. They spent many wonderful years together in Hyde Park, where they raised five children. Lewis died in October of 1988. His death left emptiness in her life. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She worked in all of the church organizations and was diligent in her callings. She was still acting as a visiting teacher supervisor at the time of her death. She also volunteered for almost 10 years in the temple each week, working in the cafeteria until her illness prevented her from doing so. She enjoyed the association of many friends she made there. She had a testimony of the gospel, and that, and her family were the most important things to her. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was a guiding influence in all of our lives. She enjoyed being outdoors and took great pride in her home and yard. She was always doing for others, and helping out when needed. She lived most of her life in Hyde Park, but moved to Smithfield seven years ago. She was a homemaker and an excellent cook and seamstress. Her family enjoyed her cooking at all the holiday parties. She loved to watch sports and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play. She was a very determined person and even though she had been ill for quite some time, still struggled to maintain her independence and be at home. She had a terrific sense of humor right to the end. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by four sons: Craig & Janice, South Jordan; Rich & Shoko, Logan; Kim & Kathy, Nibley; Ted & Dana, North Logan; and one daughter: Cathy Tarbet Dennis Martinson, Smithfield. She is also survived by four brothers: LaMon Anna Jean Perkes, Ferron & Alona Perkes, Joe & Carol Perkes, Lynn & Kris Perkes and two sisters: Darlene & Dale Reed and Mary & Cecil Balls. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lewie, and grandson Brett Tarbet. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the Smithfield Stake Center 600 East 120 South. A viewing will be held that day prior to the funeral service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A viewing will also be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home 85 South Main Smithfield.
