Charles Robert Toolson

December 15, 1922 — January 11, 2003

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, C. Robert Toolson, 80, passed away peacefully in Logan on Saturday, January 11, 2003. Bob was born December 15, 1922 in Logan to Richard Harper and Gertrude Ashcroft Toolson. He spent his entire life in Smithfield except for service in the military during World War II. Bob was raised on the family farm and continued that tradition by operating a dairy farm throughout his life. He passed that same genetic defect on to Rick and Thom. There was probably nowhere he?d rather be than sitting on the canal bank in Amalga overlooking a field of alfalfa or barley. The years spent farming were often difficult, long and always tiring. But his love of the land overshadowed even digging sugar beets in the middle of the night when the ground was frozen because it was too muddy during the day. During these years he taught his children the value of hard work which has proved to be a valuable lesson to each one. Dad married Eloise Baer in the Logan LDS Temple on November 18, 1947. Shortly after they were married they built their home at 356 South Main and raised their family there. Dad loved sports and enjoyed Sky View basketball for many years. Even the years when Sky View didn?t make it to State, he would usually drive to Ogden and attend the games anyway. Dad served on the Cache County School District Board of Education and the Bridgerland Applied Technology Board for three terms, including one term as board president. It was service he truly enjoyed. Dad also served for two terms on the Smithfield City Council and in 1990 was awarded the ?Outstanding Citizen Award? for Smithfield. He was also co-chairman of the Health Days for several years. He served in many LDS Church assignments, including the bishopric of the first singles ward organized in Smithfield and the Smithfield Stake High Council. He was a faithful home teacher for many years and truly cared for the families that were assigned to him. Probably the most valuable service he provided, however, was the time he spent with his family. Dad taught us many valuable lessons by example and was always ready with wisdom learned from the Book of Life. Some of his lessons taught and learned: If it can be fixed, just get it done and don?t look back. Another one was: It doesn?t matter how much money you make, you?ll always spend it so learn to live on what you have. He taught his children honesty and integrity and always had valuable insight to most of life?s problems. One of the things he most enjoyed during the past few years was going up to Rick?s and picking up Shed the dog and taking him for rides. Shed and Dad were seldom seen without each other while Thom was on his mission. Bob is survived by his wife, Eloise, and the following children: Susanne Toolson, Providence; R. Rick Kathy Toolson, Smithfield; Jill Anderson, Smithfield; and Pat Huggins, Tremonton and the following grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Lance Heather Robinson, Tara Rick Harris, Justiel Andy Hawkins, Thom Toolson, Cody Anderson, Brandi Anderson, Taci Anderson, Tanner Huggins, Tori Huggins, Taya Huggins, Kristen Robinson, Ryan Robinson, RJ Harris, Cambree Harris and Garrett Harris. He is also survived by the following brothers and sister: Burns Toolson, Landell Toolson, Gene Toolson, Brian Toolson and Pat Bergeson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister and a beloved grandson, Kohn Robert Toolson. The family is so very appreciative of the wonderful and caring people that touched Dad?s life during his last few difficult months. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 12 noon in the Smithfield 16th Ward Chapel, 625 East 600 South, with Bishop Dan Lindhardt conducting. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com .
