SMITHFIELD?Charles Henry Mickelsen, 75, passed away peacefully February 28, 2002 at home. He was born May 14, 1926, to Leland and Grace Grant Mickelsen. He married Dorthy Storer, June 25, 1948 in the Idaho Falls Temple and they spent nearly54 happy and productive years together. Charlie was raised in and around Bancroft, Idaho. He was drafted on his 18th birthday and served in the Navy during World War II. He also served in Army Intelligence during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, Charlie attended Ricks College. There he studied Agriculture and played football. He and Dorthy moved to Logan where he continued his studies at USAC. He graduated from Utah State in June 1951 with a degree in dairy science. Later Charles received a Masters Degree from that same institution. He joined the USU Dairy Department staff in August 1951. Positions he held at the University were herdsman, manager, and supervisor of the Dairy Research Center. The last 12 years were with the Extension Service as Dairy Specialist. His dedication, keen observation, understanding of cows and people permitted him to gain national recognition for the herd and farm. He retired from the University in 1988 after 37 years of service. Charles has served in many local, state, and national organizations such as the state Dairy Commission, Utah Holstein Association, Richmond Black & White Day Committee, and other civic organizations. He loved his association with dairymen of the state. Charlie was an avid Aggie fan and a member of the Big Blue Club. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church callings and capacities, such as scout leader, Young Men President, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Counselor in 2 different Bishoprics, Bishop, and Temple Ordinance Worker. He is survived by his wife; five children, Connie Greg Toone, Garland, Wendell Coy Mickelsen, Ephrata, PA, Kent Arleen Mickelsen, Salt Lake City, Marie Jay Bair, Bozeman, MT, Brian Christine Mickelsen, Riverton; 20 grandchildren;2 great grandchildren; and special Japanese daughter Kiyoko Tanaka Mickelsen. Also surviving are five sisters and three brothers, Marva Mickelsen, Bancroft, ID, Erma Floyd Banks, Delila Joel Simons, LaMonte Pearl Mickelsen, George Karen Mickelsen, Adrian Virginia Mickelsen, Ireta Mickelsen. His father, mother, and brother Bobby Lee preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, March 4, 2002, at the Smithfield 6th Ward Chapel, 120 South 600 East, with Bishop Michael Oliverson conducting. Friends and family may call at the church on Sunday evening, March 3, 2002, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday prior to services from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
