Carolyn Elizabeth Bailey Winter

July 31, 1932 — March 8, 2007

Carolyn Elizabeth Bailey Winter, age 74 died, with all nine of her children by her side, March 8, 2007 in Logan, Utah.
She was born July, 31, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri, the second of two children, to Glendale Plater Bailey and Clara Brady Bailey. She grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from East High School in 1949. She married Donald Keith Winter in the mission home in Independence, Missouri on August 4, 1950, and was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple April 4, 1951. For many years she served bravely as the wife of a serviceman and the mother of a growing family. No matter where Don was stationed, Carolyn was an intrepid adventurer and braved many unfamiliar circumstances. They found themselves in Texas, Kentucky, Germany, Washington, and while Don served a tour in Vietnam, she was at home raising eight children. When her sweetheart returned home from Vietnam in March 1969 with a permanently wounded knee they decided to move to Cache Valley. A year and a half later she gave birth to their ninth child. She graduated from Utah State University, Magna Cum Laude and was valedictorian, winning the Robins Award for achievement of the year. In 1980, she finished her Masters Degree in Education. Carolyn began teaching Special Education at Sky View High School and later Mountain Crest High School. She taught high school for twenty years. Her children always felt lucky that their mother was a teacher at the high school they attended and she was right there at many of their activities. She will be remembered by many of her students and friends as a fun-loving, exuberant, kind woman. When her kids and their friends were late for school, it was Carolyn Winter they called on to drive them to school, earning the nickname, Maria Andretti. And when school was let out not many days elapsed before the car was packed and Carolyn took off with some of the kids to any and all places of interest across the nation. Her children will cherish these adventures they took with their mother all their lives. Her adventurous, courageous spirit will always be a part of her legacy.
Carolyn will be remembered as a loving and supportive wife. She set an example of tenderness, love, and attentiveness. She was a wife of 57 years! Some of the last words to her children were to be kind and treat their spouses well. Of all her accomplishments, the most magnificent is that she was the mother of nine children. Her children are in awe of the wonderful life she had. She has passed on a rich heritage of faith and righteousness to generations yet to come. She and Don served two educational, one-year service missions teaching English in China. She loved the Chinese people and kept in touch with many of her students. She spent the last years of her life loving her service at the temple as an officiator and in the relief society presidency in the City Creek ward. She will be remembered as loving, beautiful, full of life, hard-working, and spiritual.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Donald Keith Winter, daughters and spouses, Deborah Sue Jones DJ, Katherine Ann Williams Scott, Elizabeth Renee Chesley Kurt, and sons, Steven Keith, Gregory Alan Laurie, Jeffrey Mark Lisa, Paul Brady Joyce, Joel Dick Wendee, John Bailey Kimberly, 37 grandchildren and 20 great-grand children. A viewing will be held Fri., March 16, 2007 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the City Creek Ward, 150 South 100 East, Richmond Utah. Funeral services will be held Sat., March 17, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with a short viewing from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the City Creek Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Richmond City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perpetual Education Fund.
