Carol Sue Ann Campbell Hawkes

February 22, 1939 — August 4, 2004

Carol Sue Ann Campbell Hawkes, a beautiful daughter of God, slipped from our loving embrace and returned to His on August 4, 2004 after a valiant struggle to overcome numerous illnesses. Her earthly sojourn began February 22, 1939 when she arrived as a very welcome surprise to Arch & Katie Campbell of Phoenix, Arizona. She was the youngest of six and took every advantage of that position in the birth order. Her siblings adored her and she adored them in return. She thrived in the warm Arizona sun, developing into a confident and talented dessert flower dazzling to behold. But greater adventures called so she packed up her drumsticks, her paintbrushes and her poodle skirt and headed north to Provo and that Mecca of marriage, BYU. It was not long before one handsome Viking fought his way to the front of the feeding frenzy and captured first place in her heart. He never lost that position. Sue married Gene Stanton Hawkes on December 29, 1959 in the Mesa LDS Temple and their journey together became an eternal one. It took a farmer of incredible skill to uproot the delicate desert blossom and transplant her to the cooler climates of southern Idaho, but here again she thrived. Her warm charm and friendly humor allowed her to make many lasting friendships that remianed dear to her until her death and will reach beyond this life. Gene & Sue were soon joined on their journey by others. First came Katie, then Lisa, Cody, Todd, M?Lissa, Adam and miraculously, Joshua. She loved them all deeply and blessed their lives with the gifts she had been given. She did not restrict her giving to her family, however, many people were blessed to have known her. She touched them by her quick wit, her creativity and her love of life. She fulfilled every measure of her creation and in every stewardship, gave 110%. From leadership positions, to teaching, to nursery, she always magnified her callings. She taught with inspiration and total commitment and her lessons were memorable. When she taught a cultural refinement lesson on Italy, you not only heard about Italy, but you saw it and tasted it as well. She loved and honored her pioneer heritage serving many years as a teacher in the Daughters of the Pioneers. She endeared herself to the youth of many wards, writing and directing road shows, ?spooking? at Halloween parties and easing teen angst with humor. Her life?s journey took her many different places and she left her unique mark on all of them. Our house full of people feels empty now. She will be greatly missed. Sue leaves her loving husband Gene, her seven children, Katie Rob Ledbetter, Lisa Hatch, Cody Sherrie Hawkes, Todd Lesli Hawkes, M?Lissa Griffith, Adam Amy Hawkes, Joshua Stacey Hawkes, 26 Ggrandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, brother Don, sister Joyce Wing and extended family. Sue?s beloved parents, Arch & Katie Campbell, brothers Paul & Chad, sister Flo Crippen, Gene?s parents Stanton & Virginia Hawkes and son-in-law Kent Griffith all met her on the other side. A viewing will be held Friday, August 6th from 6 to 8 pm at the Franklin, Idaho Stake Center, 1st East and Main Street, with a second viewing to be held Saturday, August 7th from 10 to 10:40 am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home.
