Bruce Winn Fulford

September 11, 1943 — January 4, 2007

Bruce Winn Fulford, Cache Valley?s Bionic Man, and Hyde Park?s beloved ?Candy Man? passed away January 4, 2007, quietly at his home. He was born September 11, 1943, in Rockford, Illinois, to Donald Bills Fulford and Barbara Knickerbocker Hubbell. He was the oldest of five children, all of whom survive: Linda Gault, Mary Fulford, and Charles Fulford, all of Ypsilanti, MI; and Jane Mohr of St. Petersburg, FL. He graduated from high school and from Cleary College in Ypsilanti, MI. He then served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in the Army Band, as a French Horn player in Korea. After military service, he worked for UPS for 32 years as an industrial engineer. In 1976, Fulford joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as a stake missionary, a member of the bishopric, and as a stake representative, but he was always happiest with children of any age. He and his first wife, Bonnie Gae Grieff, now of Providence, UT, had six children: Christie Samuel Richter, Sterling Heights, MI; Andrea Lance Harrison, Preston, ID; David Fulford, Raleigh, NC; Amy Luc Nguyen, Draper, UT; Joe Tracie Fulford, Missoula, MT; and Katherine Matt Paiser, Logan, UT. Marriage to Jeanne Spriggs Forgy in 1999 brought Fulford to Utah and they settled in Hyde Park. The addition of four step-children brought the grandchildren total to 25! In July of 2003, after cardiac arrest, Fulford was able to receive a Left Ventricular Assist Device at LDS Hospital, which kept his heart functioning for another precious 3 ½ years. During that time he tried to live each day to the fullest as he made himself visible in the neighborhood and the community telling everyone about his miracle heart, giving candy to the children, teaching about the LVAD, and inviting hundreds to his home. He will be missed by family especially the 25 grandchildren, and by his many friends large and small; but the research that he helped pioneer will continue to help others. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the Hype Park 7th Ward Chapel, 65 East Center Street. Friends and family may call Friday evening at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at the church from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Hyde Park Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to his family online at www.nelsonfuneralhome.com . Donations may be made to UAHP Utah Artificial Heart Program at LDS Hospital.
