Blaine Douglas Austin, 55, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away from cancer on May 25, 2024.
Doug was born on November 13, 1968, in Logan, Utah, to Blaine Austin and Carol Anderson. He graduated from Mountain Crest High School in 1986 and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Colombia and California. Doug earned his Chemistry Teaching Education degree from Utah State University in 1995. He met his beloved wife, Stephanie Meikle Austin, of Smithfield, during a snowstorm the same year delivering pizza to her workplace. They were married on May 25, 1995, in the Jordan River Temple.
Doug worked in many professions over the years, including a pizza delivery driver (his car still smells like pizza), most recently as an electrician over the last few decades, including returning to his alma mater USU. But most importantly, he dedicated his life to his family first and was most fulfilled by the happiness and accomplishments of his children.
Doug loved to laugh, but it was hard to make him laugh. When someone actually succeeded, it felt like an accomplishment—unless the joke was at his expense, in which case the offender received “the glare.” Doug’s 50th birthday was marked by his siblings roasting him with lines like, “You read Chemistry, BOOM, roasted,” “You learned to solve a Rubik’s cube before YouTube, BOOM, roasted” and “Doug gets sunburned reading books about the sun, BOOM, roasted.”
Doug had a unique relationship with each of his children. B is excelling in automotive mechanics and music; Doug was proud of their musical talent watching them play saxophone, piano, and just about anything else. Mick loves lacrosse and video games, and Doug loved being on the sidelines of either. Maddie was a dedicated caretaker to both her Mom and Dad, and now professionally offers her compassion in the field. The happiest Doug ever was, according to family, was on Katie’s wedding day and with Katie he passed on his love for all things fantasy and anything that he would proudly consider nerdy. Though never very outspoken, Doug became more opinionated and even loud in the last few months of his life, embracing a candidness that only facing death could bring.
Doug enjoyed sending funny TikTok videos to his kids, complaining about politicians, cheating at Rook, and savoring milkshakes. The support from Doug’s ward and the community was invaluable, bringing comfort and companionship to him and his family.
Doug is survived by his four children: Katie (Brian), Maddie, B, and Mick; his mother, Carol (Tim) Austin Anderson; his two brothers, Brian “The Great” Austin (Jamie) and K.C “The Comedian” Austin (Lizzy); and his one only and favorite sister, Leslie Austin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stephanie, his father, Blaine Austin, of Preston, Idaho, his brother Cody Austin, of Hyrum, Utah, and his baby, Stephen.
A funeral service will be held on June 1, 2024. The viewing will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 AM with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM at 340 E 300 S, Smithfield, UT.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established for his children. Donations can be made at Logan Cache Rich Credit Union, 72 E. 700 N, Logan, Utah, 84321, under the name of the Austin Children Scholarship Fund. Alternatively, you may also donate to Grandma Evelyn Meikle’s Venmo account @Evelyn-Meikle.
