Barta Caldwell Shaffer has returned to a loving Father in Heaven after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Barta passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 2, 2015, at the age of 88 surrounded by her family.
Barta was born September 26, 1927, to Wallace and Mar Caldwell in Vernal, Utah. She was known for her beautiful smile and caring nature. Barta grew up in her beloved Maeser, Utah, graduating from Uintah High School in 1945.
Barta met Lonnie J. Thomas in Maeser. After their marriage they lived in Vernal until 1954. The family moved to Boise, Idaho, where they lived for the next 20 years. Barta was divorced from Lonnie in 1969.
Barta was introduced to Don Shaffer in 1973 and it was magic! They were married the following January in the Logan, Utah Temple and lived in Logan for two years. Barta & Don also lived in Murray, Utah for a few years. They moved back to Logan, Utah in 1976. Together they established Shaffer House Bakery with Barta as the Bookkeeper, Sales Manager and Business Manager.
She held many callings in the LDS Church during her life. She served as Relief Society President, taught the Beehives, led the music, played the piano and worked in the Temple. Barta had a strong testimony of, and love for, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was very proud of her pioneer heritage and deeply loved her parents. She had a love for music and nature, which she has passed down to her children. She loved to cook and served wonderful meals to her family and friends. She found great joy in spending time with her extended family.
Barta is survived by her loving husband Don Shaffer, one sister Eloise (Keith) Adams, daughter Diane (Dean) Kohler, son Dan (Linda) Thomas, daughter Marlayne Lyman. Barta embraced Don's children as her own and is also survived by daughter Gloria (Timothy) Taggart, son Neil (LuAnn) Shaffer, daughter Diane (Greg) Waller, 20 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Barta was preceded in death by her parents Wallace and Mar Caldwell, sister Betty (Lynn) Mecham, and brothers Lowell Caldwell, Larry Caldwell, daughter in law Nancy Barraclough Thomas, and a grandson Samuel Caine Thomas.
