Anna Marie Sorensen

January 18, 1920 — June 30, 2015

Anna Marie Cecilie Nielsen Sorensen of Smithfield, Utah passed away peacefully on June 30, 2015 at the Gables Care Center. Anna was born on January 18, 1920 in Hojene, Denmark. She married Villy Sorensen on October 7, 1941. Anna, Villy, and their two sons joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1948, after being taught and baptized by Glen Marcussen a missionary from Logan, Utah. Anna rented a building and started a primary for the children in her area, serving and teaching LDS and non-LDS children alike. In 1957, Anna and Villy immigrated to Logan, Utah with the help of the Marcussen family.
Anna was an expert seamstress, and known throughout Cache Valley for her beautifully crocheted baby sweaters, dresses, blankets, and booties. She nurtured a love of creativity in her grandchildren, as they learned the skills of sewing, crocheting, knitting, and cross-stitching sitting beside her. Her grandchildren grew up in her home as much as their own; she was the one who taught their parents to parent. She passed along stories of Denmark and the family’s strong, proud Danish ancestry. Christmas Eve at Grandma Sorensen’s house was the most looked forward to day of the year. Anna also instilled in her grandchildren a love of flowers and gardening. They have many memories of damp paper towels in Grandma’s pocket, wrapped around a plant start that she had “borrowed.”
Anna is survived by her children John A. Sorensen (Lois), Per A. Sorensen (Sherri), and Lea Rogers. She has left a legacy in her ten grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Villy E. Sorensen, her parents, and her two sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 at the Smithfield Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home at 85 South Main Street in Smithfield. The family would like to give their sincere appreciation to both the Gables Assisted Living staff and Access Home Health and Hospice and their staff for the care they have given to our Mother and Grandmother.
