Amos Ray Lewis passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, January 24, 2008 in Bellingham, Washington after ninety three years of life. He was born August 17, 1914 in Oxford, Idaho to Amos and Ruth Lewis. He married Verna McBride May 29, 1934 in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they raised 5 children. Verna passed away July 27, 1999
Ray is survived by two sons: L. Ray Lewis, Beaver Dam, Arizona; Max William Lewis, Bellingham, Washington and a daughter Judy Lewis of Bellingham Washington. He has 10 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 24 great-great grandchildren. Five of his sisters: Arta Nielson of Ririe, Idaho; Erva May Kennedy of Las Vegas, Nevada; Thora Bean of Elcerrito, California; Gloria Lavetter of Bountiful, Utah; and Opal Rita of Las Vegas also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two daughters Ruth Post and Mary Jean Mower, two brothers Earl and Henry Doyal Lewis, a sister Susan Coy Hadfield and one grandchild Darrel LeRoy Brown. Ray loved his savior, Jesus Christ and his Father in Heaven. He was a dedicated member of the LDS church and accepted many callings, including serving on a mission in Washington D.C. beside his wife Verna and daughter Judy. Later in life he officiated in the Logan and Ogden Temples. He was a master carpenter. He worked in the carpenter shop at Utah State University in Logan for the last15 years of his career, where he was esteemed by his peers and supervisors for his knowledge, craftsmanship and management abilities. He advanced from a temporary position to become the Superintendent of Carpenters. He also enjoyed buying and remodeling homes in order to sell them then start over again. Verna said she felt like they lived their lives in a construction zone.
Ray loved spending time with his family camping, fishing, singing and dancing. He was fond of playing tricks on the people he loved. He was much loved and respected by all his children and grandchildren. He was always there when we needed him, and he also knew when to let us figure out problems for ourselves. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones and all who were blessed to know him.
