Amos Smith Kays, Jr.

July 15, 1912 — October 8, 2005

Amos was born on July 15, 1912 in Lankershim now North Hollywood, California and lived there for 75 years until he moved to Bothwell, Utah. During World War II, he worked at Lockheed Aircraft Company. He married Berna Ila Kemsley Kays of Ogden, Utah in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on November 30, 1953. Their home was in North Hollywood. He served the North Hollywood First Ward in several capacities. He, his wife, and their daughter Alta enjoyed fishing in the Pacific Ocean. After 30 years of working for the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, he retired to care for his ailing wife. She died in November of 1977.
In early 1987, Amos was brought to Bothwell to live with his daughter's family. He enjoyed fishing in several Utah rivers and streams with Alta and/or his grandchildren. For many years, he enjoyed bowling in senior leagues in Ogden, Brigham City and Tremonton. He enjoyed caring for the animals in his new rural environment. He was devoted to his family and to his grandchildren and to his great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife Berna in November 1977. He is survived by his daughter, Alta Thayer and son-in-law Robert Thayer of Bothwell, granddaughter Donna Weyland and grandson-in-law Joe Weyland, Grandson Robert Thayer, III, Grandson, Michael Hansen and great grandson Malek Amos Hansen. Also, several nephews and nieces.
Amos, age 93, died at the Brigham City Community Hospital of cardiac arrest on Saturday, October 8, 2005. Per his wishes, he will be cremated. Interment will be decided later. His memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2005 at the Bothwell Ward LDS Church, 10350 West 11600 North, Bothwell, Utah. No flowers, please.
