Albert Heaps

Albert Heaps, age 90, died August 25, 2004. He was born April 30, 1914, in Smithfield, Utah to George and Sarah Lavina Olney Heaps. He attended Smithfield Elementary and North Cache High School. As a young man he worked on the family farm. He always talked of the wonderful times with his dad and brothers on the farm and the bond of love that developed between them. He married Donna Godfrey on November 29, 1952 in Winnemucca, Nevada. Albert and Donna were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on December 9, 1964. Donna had five daughters from a previous marriage, and Albert had three daughters from a previous marriage as well. Albert loved and raised these girls. Albert and Donna were also blessed with two loving sons. Albert was an avid fisherman. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing with his girls and especially his two sons. He loved spending time with his family. He worked at the defense depot and Remington Arms during World War II. He later became a skilled carpenter, being known as the ?best of the best? by many of his peers. He worked as a carpenter for 50 years. Albert was member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 184. He worked on large construction jobs throughout Utah, the United States, and overseas. He worked on projects such as the McKay Dee Hospital, the Folsom Dam in California, and airbases in Algiers. He always looked forward to construction projects close to home so that he could be with his family. Albert was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He supported both sons on LDS missions. He served as a faithful home teacher for many years and a temple worker for six years in the Logan LDS Temple. At the time of his passing, he was a High Priest in the Smithfield 14th Ward. He is survived by his two sons, Kent Mary Lou Heaps, Lakewood, CA; Kevin Chris Heaps, Logan, UT; three daughters, Shirley Steve Gracek, Denver, CO; Vella Blaine Durrant, Lewiston, UT; Alberta Maurice Mather, Smithfield, UT; and five step-daughters, Mary Sam Riter, South Ogden, UT; Carole Ken Smith, Sandy, UT; Faye Skabelund, Mesa, AZ; Maureen Carlos Elwood, Ogden, UT; Nansi Don Hobbs, Mesa, AZ. He was the last surviving member of a large family. He was preceded in death by his wife; sister, Vella Marlow Woodward; brothers, Alvin, George, Golden, Orrie, Orvil, and Willard; step-sister, Sarah Mae Downs Joseph Read; step-brothers, Bill and Roscoe. He had 50 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of VistaCare Hospice. A special thank-you to Peggy Wolfley, Royella Smith, and Dr. Kevin Duke for their support and love throughout this process. They were always just a phone call away. A special thank you to the staff at Angie?s Restaurant for years of great service and for keeping Dad well fed since Mom passed away in April. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 30, in the Smithfield LDS 2nd Ward Chapel, 175 S 100 W in Smithfield, Utah, with Bishop Steven Jenson. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 29, at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, Utah and from 9:30 to 10:30, Monday, August 30, 2004 at the church.
