Smithfield - Adrianus van Dam, 94, passed away at home on Sunday March 20, 2005.
He was born July 6th 1910 in Rotterdam, Holland to Adrianus van Dam and Wilhelmina van Otterloo. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
He married Francina Verhoeff on Jan 9th 1935 in Rotterdam. He was a hard worker all his life. He was taken as a prisoner of war during World War II by the Germans because he refused to work for them. He was kept prisoner in Germany, Russia and Poland for two years.
After the war he started working for his brother in law in the auto body industry and worked there until he immigrated to the United States in 1962. His wife and children joined the LDS church and he was reactivated in 1956. He was sealed to his family in the Swiss Temple in 1957.
He served in the branch presidency in Rotterdam and was called to the first High Council formed in Europe in Holland where he served faithfully until coming to the States. He also served in the Sunday School, Young Men?s and was a High Priest Group Leader in Santa Monica, CA for many years. He worked as a custodian for the LDS Church in CA until his retirement in 1979 at which time he moved to Hyde Park. He loved living in Hyde Park, where he raised pigs for many years until his dear wife passed away in March 1993. He then moved to Smithfield.
He was a faithful home teacher and remained active in the Church until his passing. He is survived by his children: Adrianus Carolyn van Dam of Wellsville and Peggy Robert Womack of Smithfield, 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, parents and his wife.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, March 24, 2005 at the Smithfield 10th Ward chapel, 345 E. 300 S in Smithfield, with Bishop Rick Toolson conducting. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening, Mar 23 from 6-8:00 pm at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield, and an hour prior to services on Thursday Mar 24 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the church.
